Longoria, Soto Rookie Of the Year Memorabilia

The Associated Press has reported that Tampa Bay Rays Evan Longoria and Chicago Cubs Geovany Soto have been named Rookies of the Year for their respective leagues. Both Longoria and Soto became the first players in their team history to win this coveted award.

November 10, 2008 AP:

Evan Longoria of the Tampa Bay Rays won the American League Rookie of the Year award on Monday by a unanimous vote, and Geovany Soto of the Chicago Cubs won the National League award.

Longoria became the first Tampa Bay player to win a national award from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Longoria, a power-hitting third baseman, received all 28 first-place votes.

“It’s so special,” Longoria said. “It’s tough to put into words. Obviously, I appreciate every vote. The whole award is everything to me and I’m just so happy that I was able to receive it.”

Longoria batted .272 with 27 homers and 85 runs batted in despite missing five weeks after breaking his right wrist. He set a rookie record with six postseason homers.

Soto, a catcher, got 31 of 32 first-place votes. The other went to first baseman Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds.

“It was really emotional,” Soto said. “I feel very honored.”

Soto, 25, hit .285 with 23 homers, 35 doubles and 86 R.B.I. He became the first catcher to be the rookie of the year in either league since Mike Piazza of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1993.

Red Sox - Never Say Die

It was pretty simple for the Red Sox...lose and you're out. The Sox proved that they're not ready to go home just yet as they beat the Rays 4-2. The come back kids are one win away from going back to the World Series.

They played like you would expect a defending champion to play. Josh Beckett gave up two runs and four hits before being relieved and the Red Sox bullpen combined for 4 scoreless, and hitless, innings in tonight's Game 6 victory.

Now it comes down to Game 7. Win and you're in.

Both managers are realize the importance of remaining focused on the next game.

Rays' skipper Joe Maddon had this to say about the importance of their next game.

"It's all about how we react to the moment, and it's a seventh game," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "It's a great learning experience. For us to win that game would be something special for us, also. So it's not about looking into the past. It's about looking into the future right now."

While Red Sox manager Terry Francona added, "It's probably pretty appropriate. We come down to the last game, and whoever plays better gets to move on."

Will the Rays break under the pressure or will they bring the World Series to Tampa Bay?

Will the Red Sox continue their momentum and come back to from a 3-1 deficit to defend their title in the 2008 World Series?

If Game 7 is anything like the rest of the games in this series then baseball fans are in for a treat.

Red Sox Unbelievable Comeback In Game 5

Did you catch Game 5 of the Red Sox - Rays game? WOW?!? If you saw it you were fortunate enough to catch the largest Post-Season comeback in 79 years!

The Red Sox were losing 7-0 in the top of the 7th before making the 2nd largest comeback in Major League history.

Third TYNES A Charm

In dramatic fashion NY Giants Kicker Lawrence Tynes makes the game winning field goal in overtime to send the NY Giants to Super Bowl XLII. Tynes missed a field goal with 6:49 left that would have put the Giants up by 3.

He then missed a 36 yard field goal with four seconds left in regulation.

The Giants will face off against the undefeated New England Patriots in a game set for history.

This marks the first time in history that two QB brothers have made it to consecutive Super Bowls.

The Patriots will attempt to close their season with yet another win and be the first team in NFL history to go 19-0. (The 1972 Dolphins also went undefeated but finished the season 17-0.)

VA - Keep Your Rubber Balls At Home

Richmond, VA - State Del. Lionel Spruill introduced a bill Tuesday that would ban the display of rubber testicles dangling from motorized vehicles.

The idea came from a constituent whose young daughter spotted an example of the trail hitch adornment and asked her father to explain it

"'I didn't know what to tell her,'" Spruill said the constituent told him before Spruill vowed to stop such displays.

"I said, 'Sir, I'm going to be a laughingstock, but I'm going to do it,'" he said.

Spruill plans on bringing the $24.99 set of trailer testicles with him for a legislative show and tell.

"I'm going to do it," Spruill told a handful of reporters after Tuesday's House session adjourned. "I'm going to bring them out here and show them to you till they tell me to stop."

I was reading a recent post on Mike Litman's blog and it reminded me of an old tale from Aesop's Fables.

The tale is shown below.

Well, you may not be opening a Nintendo Wii Christmas morning but for those of you that have been searching for the much coveted gaming console, Nintendo and Gamestop have promised to come to the rescue (while supplies last).

So how does it work?

Nintendo and GameStop have partnered up in an effort to bring more Wii's to You's.

So, on December 20th and 21st, hopeful Wii-owners will be able to pre-purchase a Wii at their local GameStop for guaranteed delivery by the end of January.

$250 will get you the promise of a Wii by the end of January 2008.

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime specified the offer is only good while supplies last, and while he assures us that there are "tens of thousands" of rain checks available it still may not be enough.

Be sure to contact your local GameStop to see whether they will sell the Rain Checks in the early hours (read 12:01 AM)on December 20th or if they plan to first offer them during their normal business hours. Either way expect to see people already lined up outside of GameStop.

A Season For BBQ's?

I was talking to my wife's friend yesterday and the subject of barbecuing came up. We had a friendly argument about whether or not there is a specific season for barbecuing.

She seems to think that barbecuing should only be done in the summertime. Obviously she didn't grow up with my family!

My dad was like the Karl Malone of barbecuing (for those non Basketball fans that was a mailman reference). Rain, sleet or snow couldn't stop him from grilling up a great dinner.

My dad didn't have his own personal branding tools (at that time) but he did make a name for himself by always delivering.

Back to the argument...she conceded defeat when I offered to prove her wrong and invited her over for a BBQ dinner this winter. However, something tells me that was her plan all along.

You'll certainly get no argument from me about how smart women can be, but I'm cool with the win-win outcome. We'll have a great dinner with great company!

Just a quick update about my father-in-law's house...the river crested and we haven't had significant rain for the last three days.

We still haven't been able to make it to the house because his road is flooded. So as of now we aren't sure if the water has made it in the house yet.

Death By Garbage

Have you heard the story of the Collyer brothers?

According to Wikipedia Homer and Langley Collyer were
two American brothers who became famous because of
their snobbish nature, filth in their homes, and compulsive
hoarding.

Homer and Langley Collyer were compulsive hoarders.
The two brothers had a fear of throwing anything away
(disposophobia) and obsessively collected newspapers and
other junk in their house. They even set up booby-traps in corridors
and doorways to protect against intruders.

In 1947, an anonymous tip called that there was a
dead body in the Collyer house, and after much initial
difficulty getting in, the police found Homer Collyer
dead and Langley no where to be found. About two
weeks later, after removing nearly 100 tons of garbage
from the house, workers found Langley Collyer's
partially decomposed (and rat-chewed) body just
10 feet away from where they had found his brother.

Apparently, Langley had been crawling through tunnels
of newspapers to bring food to his paralyzed brother
when he set off one of his own booby-traps. Homer
died several days later from starvation.

Moral of the story...

Don't buy garbage. Get rid of those old lighters and
pick up one of our new high quality NFL Zippo Lighters.
